"Girls In The Hood Read Books," Art Print

$45.00

This original 8.5x11 digital illustration is inspired by Mixxed Rose’s poet cover, available to watch on Instagram. Drawing influence from Megan Thee Stallion’s song "Girls in the Hood," the piece reflects Mixxed Rose’s own experience growing up as a black girl with a love for literature, yet facing ridicule for the way she spoke and how her vernacular differed from her peers. This illustration is dedicated to black youth who embrace their love for literature, despite being criticized for the way they express themselves.

The poem:

For the girls in the hood who got teased for talking white
I hope yo diction is still as tight as them ponytails with the slick backs
Cause there was nothing ever wrong with the way you spoke back to yo classmates
The books you read just added more sauce to yo ebonics
So the next time they sleep on ya voice just throw on that bonnet
Cause someone on the other side of the world is waiting for you to wake up
And say sum
